Everyday Jones™ Mixing Control Room When I first started writing songs with Alissa, I only had the basics down. She’d either come up with a lyrical melody that I’d wrap my guitar around, I’d come up with a guitar part and she’d write a melody around that, or sometimes Alissa had the music written out and I was to make it more solidified. Either way, what we ended up with was a song. A bare bones acoustic song since neither one of us played bass or drums.
Thats great and all…until you want to record it for a studio album. I had no idea really where to start. I knew what I liked in other songs you hear on the radio, but how did they achieve that? How do you get that massive chorus sound? What about that guitar tone? What the hell is a vocal doubling?
I wished there was a repository of Logic Pro or Pro Tools sessions from some of my favorite artists that showed me a glimpse of what they did. Unfortunately, there isn’t.
Once a month I will release one track from “Season of Hope”. You can download all the files, mix it, and place your SoundCloud mix on the Month’s page. Sound Cool?
So, here’s my idea. And it’s an idea I’ve had brewing for about a year. I didn’t want to act on this idea until I was contacted by Graham Cochrane of “The Recording Revolution” asking if he could use “Take Your Love” for a project he was doing. It was the same idea as mine, but on steroids.
His idea was to allow musicians and sound engineers (or whoever paid him), to download all the tracks from “Take Your Love” and allow them to mix it. They’d then post their mixes and everyone could critique or comment on them. Cool idea. Great minds think alike. Now, I’m not trying to take business away from Graham. In fact, go to www.duelingmixes.com and sign up. You’ll get better instruction on mixing from him than me. In fact, you’ll get NO instruction from me. You’ll just get some files and a place to post your mix. You’ll get a link back to your page or whatever too.
Here’s the idea:
